MP3 Update: Landlord

Every so often, the Cape Town music scene asks me to collaborate on something unusual. This week, it’s been teaming up with The Sleepers‘ guitarist Nic Roos and doing my best Bob Dylan impression on behalf of a shark from outer space. Check out London-based comic art collective SemioticCohesion.com for the full madness, or take a listen to Landlord. (Full lyrics below by Tom McNally).

MP3 Update: F#m Melody [v3.0]

Listen, students! MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) is like sheet music for computers. MIDI triggers virtual instruments, like this solo piano piece F# Melody [v3.0]. The downside is that it sounds more like a computer trying to sound like a piano than an actual piano. The plus side? Without MIDI, I’d have to actually BRING a flippin’ grand piano into my studio to record this piece. I’ll take MIDI, thanks.

Images: Our Debut Violin DJ Gig

Dj Jezz and I hooked up at Vodacom Golf Village in Plumstead, Cape Town last night for a private birthday party, some sausage rolls, and the first violin-DJ combo gig we’ve both ever done. The vibe was right for some Pravda23. Got some cool pics, and we’ll see where this one goes. And happy birthday, Mzi!

Hotel Phalaborwa: Comedy Music

I recently received my first-ever prize for a musical endeavour! Thanks to RealMenThatCantSing.com, I’m the proud owner of a 32GB iPod Touch. The winning vid was a VERY South African one-take comedic cover of Hotel California, and you can check it out below or on my profile here. Thanks to Flight of the Conchords for the inspiration.

*** Musically speaking, this is a very weird departure from what I call Pravda23. But hey, whatever.

v3.0 Album Design Ideas

A couple of ideas for the next version of The Kuleshov Effect. Inspired by a growing obsession with monochrome datamatrix images, I’ve given the design an active QR-code on the back. You WILL want to scan it when you buy the album, so download a code reader on your phone in the meantime >>> here.

Page 7: Dot Comic Edition 2

Edition 2 of Dot Comic is being released, one panel at a time. Under the characteristically spontaneous guidance of my virtual companion pravda23, I steal a fancy sports car. pravda23 attempts to explain the fruitlessness of material pursuit. Added below is Page 7 of 16.

Edition 2 is presently being released as part of a series. Check back daily for updates on Edition 2 of pravda23’s Dot Comic: Money & Wealth.

Where’s Edition 1?

Also known as Version 2.7, Edition 1 of Dot Comic was released in 2008 with themed merchandise packs, including CD album v2.7 of The Kuleshov Effect, car license sticker, and button badge.

My Red Bull Music Academy Selection

Computer keeps crashing. It’s the most frustrating thing in the world when you know you have the and the passion but not the tools. Anyway, managed to bang out the required 30 mins to apply for Red Bull Music Academy 2010. You send off your stuff, as well as a lengthy application form / personality test, and you hopefully get selected. If you do, they fly you over (London this time) and you have a good time making music with people from all over the world for 2 weeks.

Never made it before, but I disregard the results every year. For me, It’s more about applying than getting anywhere. And it’s a boot to get my stuff done.

Here’s the selection of tracks I’m sending off, and most of them will be featured on Version 3.0 of the album.

MP3 Update: Electricity [v3.0]

My self-appointed engineer (Godsend of a man) Rob aka GonZo(fb) reckons we should publish this track as ‘Massive Release.’ Incredibly clever name, considering that it sounds like UK earthwads Massive Attack, release is the opposite of attack in sound engineering terms, and it’s a big track for Pravda23. I like clever puns.

PS. Rob did the final mix on the Forgetfulness (v2.7) video.
