If You Wanna Get Something Done…

I threw a little party at my house last week Friday. It was a near-completely solo mission. T-Bird and Oneshot rocked up early to help set up, and I had some help clearing up. There were about 50 people throughout the evening. Johnny Cradle played the world’s most perfect house party music, and it was a great success.

Oneshot MacNeilage Original Skull Art

A quick pic of the skull my old buddy Oneshot painted for the Tattoo Convention in Cape Town last week. Skulls were on display as part of a charity drive. According to the artist himself, the routine ‘money-goes-to-charity’ spiel that got all the artists on board for free turned out to be the routine ‘money-goes-to-organisers’, but that’s just a rumour.

More fun…

  • Check out the very same skull wearing the pravda23 top hat.
  • Some pravda23 Sketching, perhaps?

The Secret To Success (A Serious Post)

Street Art in Ekaterinburg, Russia | Jason Eppink (Flickr)

It’s this burning sense that somewhere else, ten thousand miles away in Vancouver, Perth, Kuala Lumpur, Buenos Aires, that ‘things are happening’.

I read the Internet, one art blog at a time. They’re all clean, slick, well coded little numbers with colourful CSS and snappy titles, the kind devised over an evening of guilloché. Wiki it, and then spot the matching word-for-word definition on the blogs of the young artists, desperate for recognition. Look at me, look what I can do!

When I was travelling the world a few years back, I noticed a sense of possibility. Regardless of where I was, people – people like me – were getting by somehow. They were finding ways, making plans, tossing themselves headfirst into a whirlwind just to feel the wind in their hair.

So how do we reconnect with this sense of possibility?

The Funniest Web Page On The Internet

If you’re a weirdo, fond of surrealistic, semi-abstract nonsense, you have to understand just how redonks a page like this can be. Viral graphic meme / web application pravda23 has personally scoured the entire Internet [confused?] and declared the web page of Jack Handy quotes to be the funniest page ever uploaded.

Johnny Cradle Confirmed For v2.7 Launch!

It’s all over the news. South African trip-hop duo Johnny Cradle will be performing at the launch of pravda23‘s latest version, v2.7 [party details]. Originally from P.E., Johnny Cradle is awesome, and delivers muted, purple music along the lines of Massive Attack, Bjork, Morcheeba and Portishead. But in English and Xhosa which is very exciting to me.

    Video | Crazy Eye

Just messing around with a copy of Premiere donated to me by onelargeprawn, a regular contributor in the SA blogosphere.

    Crazy Eye

Here’s the story: I was on an editing deadling for a friend’s family reunion I’d shot a few weeks earlier. I was desperately asking around for a program that could handle DV files, and she recommended Premiere, and pointed me in the direction of The Prawn. I went to The Prawn’s house, met him, and picked it up with thanks, doing the obliging ‘just-met-you-and-now-we’re-copying-software’ small talk. I even dropped a copy of The Kuleshov Effect [v2.6] on his machine before I left.

    9 Incredibly Interesting Insights

    • When you wake up, before you do anything else, take a few minutes. Ask what you want from the day. Be creative. Drink some Rooibos while you do. But not just any Rooibos. The Universe drinks Lipton.
    • According to the Gods of Luxury, you always get what you ask for. I’m glad that this is true, otherwise I’d probably be fantasizing about yachts and martinis instead of doing the work.
    • If you practise an instrument at 3am, and if you hear the banging on the door, scream, “What the fuck do you want now!??!” Seriously, man. Respect, please.

    The Big Book Of Confessions

Pravda23 has decided to publish some of my early sketches online under the title ‘The Big Book Of Confessions.’ If you’ve ever worked in a restaurant or whatever, this is a tribute to all the time spent in all the back-rooms at all the coffee shops, bars and restaurants all over the universe, on some lunch break, sketching away, reminding myself to just keep going no matter what. I am ambidextrous. Some of these were done with my right hand, some with my left.
