Masiqale literally means “let’s begin” in Xhosa. As part of the Kuleshov Effect, my dynamic, self-remixing album, tracks update, changing in sound and quality. This is a fatter, louder and more complex house remix of the previous versions of Masiqale, but holds onto the killer guitar hook. Take a listen below to compare.

What tracks are to composers, DJ mixes are to DJs. A DJ selects a number of homogenous tracks, mixes them together and releases 60 – 90 minutes of music, sometimes with a track or two of their own thrown in. In this experiment, the Sticky Kuleshov Mix is my first attempt at releasing an hour of original music in this format. Sourced from the past five years of Kuleshov Effect tracks, here’s an hour of creative cross-blending from the mainframe featuring live, home-made violin, guitar and djembe and planting footprints in drum & bass, house and dubstep. The Sticky Kuleshov Mix also features the contributions of Pravda23 fans, who were encouraged to contribute spoken word, poetry and thoughts. Enjoy, and thank you comrades!

Pravda23 sometimes feels a little TOO much like the program. You know that feeling where you find yourself saying, “this isn’t the art that I create!” or “what am I gonna do with this piece?” It’s a form of sabotage, putting the cart before the horse, and pigeon-holing yourself before the thing’s even been finished! Battling with other tracks allowed me to just enjoy the simplicity of Solid [v5.0]. It reminds me that I can actually just create downtempo hip hop if I want to. Thank you, Pravda.

In my juvenile mind, the idea was that one day someone was going to phone me up and offer me some lucrative music deal which would allow me to sit long hours into the night on white leather couches sipping fancy liqueurs. Nowdays, the idea of ‘someone else’ even noticing what I’m doing with The Kuleshov Effect kinda makes me chuckle. Labour of love.
