Ta-dah. Our gig at Espresso Dot Kom in Kommetjie, Cape Town. Left to right is all-round creative Geoff Downes, Machineri guitarist Andre Geldenhuys and myself. With back to the camera is James, a very cool dude who’s surname I still don’t know because his girlfriend won’t get back to me on Facebook, but what does it matter. (update: it’s Rautenbach. I’m a stickler for facts.)
Along with a guy called Anton, we jammed live to around 20ppl on guitars, djembe, violin, percussion, harmonica and electronic loops, making up most of it on the fly. The video below is about dolphin poaching, and is dead serious.

A short video story about my first musical adventure to Joburg with The Sout Project last week. Visit Cape Town-based Sout Project for more on emergence. In keeping with the theme of spontaneous improvisation, the audio for this video was created, edited and exported in 20 minutes whilst waiting in the departure lounge and on the return flight.

i cooked up a new beat earlier today, and worked out a few violin licks to go with it. now, there’s nothing quite like making up music on the spot. it sounds rough and raw and anyone who’s ever played any instrument will quite likely hear the cracks in the performance. but in a way, humanizing it becomes the point. i plan to do this from scratch and on-the-fly one day.
