MP3: It’s Not Funny (The Manhattan Boys)

If you go to the Cape Quarter in Greenpoint, you’ll find a restaurant on the corner called Manhattan. A waiter called “Hahahah!” (dunno his real name) agreed to record his voice. Using the cutlery, coffee cups and some basic gear, I created and recorded loops, basslines, guitar parts and musical elements, looping my old friend Hahahah!’s voice as part of the creative input! Go Hahahah! This is how I’m creating a collection of songs called Live From Wherever You Are, which uses the YourVoice project to collect and record ordinary folks like you. The artistic statement is that commonplace is the new sensational. Hahaha! HA!

I am magnificent: a musical dream.

Excuse the ego trip, but every so often I just gotta remind myself why I’m doing it all. Here we go

One day, when I finally grow up, I’d like to be a magnificent artist. I will invite the world to my music performances and surprise friends with my hard-earned talent. They’ll fall over backwards, clamber for attention, and boast, “I’ve been friends with him since we were young!” Some will lick their lips, pin me in corridors and politely demand to know how I managed to succeed. I’ll tell them what I know then, what I am learning now.

Old Friends Gallery Update

I’ve updated the Old Friends Gallery with a few new…uh, old faces.

Why wait to reap the benefits of pension discounts? Send a pic to fun (at) pravda23 (dot) com and get old. Remember: eye contact and well-lit, straight, unobstructed shots. Help an old man grow the gallery (I’m shot number 6).

5 Minutes With A South African Prostitute

I spoke to a prostitute the other day to find out how much she charges, how often she sees clients, how she got into it and how she sees the men and women who pull over for business.

How To Make A Graffiti Stencil

Seven short steps on how to create your own graffiti stencil, which is what me and Bambi did this weekend.

You’ll need:

* a cool design
* one sheet of acetate (overhead projector paper, for you people over 25)
* a crop / blade tool
* a fine permanent marker pen
* masking tape
* a piece of plastic (steal an ADT sign) or cardboard (a case of beer should do. I was thinking about getting one anyway)

Step one

Print your design onto paper. You can also just print the outline of your design, to save ink.

Dolphin Poaching

Ta-dah. Our gig at Espresso Dot Kom in Kommetjie, Cape Town. Left to right is all-round creative Geoff Downes, Machineri guitarist Andre Geldenhuys and myself. With back to the camera is James, a very cool dude who’s surname I still don’t know because his girlfriend won’t get back to me on Facebook, but what does it matter. (update: it’s Rautenbach. I’m a stickler for facts.)

Along with a guy called Anton, we jammed live to around 20ppl on guitars, djembe, violin, percussion, harmonica and electronic loops, making up most of it on the fly. The video below is about dolphin poaching, and is dead serious.
